Christopher Wool, Untitled, 2000 The Harder You Look

An art collection starts before you buy. It starts with an inquisitive attitude, with research and personal discoveries.

  • Art galleries are the last free lunch in town. The doors are open. Visit them more.
  • Look harder. Dig deep. Immediate gratification will turn into boredom and randomness soon. Pretty is fine but art can be so much more. It would be like Mo Farah jogging for 20 minutes. It would be like George Soros settling for a 2% annual return. This is unpopular because we live in an age of immediate gratification. We have the attention span of a fly and we don’t question further why we are attracted to something. You will love your art purchases more and for longer if you dig deep and are able to point what attracts you to that art object or how it makes you feel.
  • Ask questions. Query about the artist’s thinking, materials, medium, making process, career evolution, price… You will learn a lot along the way and soon you will discover that some people are winging it. The galleries’ stuffiness and intimidation will all be a thing of the past.
  • Against the tyranny of the press release. Truly liberating. Believe in self-discovery. Let your own questions and ideas guide your art learning curve and research process.
  • Weave a story that speaks to you and about you: Your individuality, desires, taste and character. There are no two same stories about collecting art.
